Indonesia is an ethnically diverse country, with around 300 distinct native ethnic groups. The Javanese are the largest ethnic group, constituting 40.2% of the population, and are politically dominant. The Sundanese, Batak, Madurese, Minangkabau and Buginese are the next largest groups in the country. The Batak people strictly maintain their family names known as "marga" for generations; about 14 to 18 generations in 2020. They also maintain their family tree known as "tarombo". A Batak person can not marry another person of the same family name, they are considered to be brother and sister.  The relationship between two persons is based on the family name (marga) and their positions in the family tree (tarombo).

There are hundreds of marga within the Batak community such as Aritonang, Batubara, Butarbutar, Butargabe, Gultom, Hasibuan, Limbong, Manurung, Nainggolan, Ompusunggu, Panjaitan, Rajagukguk, Simanjuntak, Tampubolon, etc.
